Red Elvis
Self-striking ruby red borosilicate; strikes lighter in oxidizing flame, darker with flame or kiln strike. Work neutral to oxidizing at slightly lower temps than most rubies.
Outcomes
-
light, sometimes streaky red after self-strike coolingSelf-strikes as it cools in a neutral to oxidizing flame. Work at slightly lower temperature than most rubies for cleanest results.
-
deeper ruby red after flame or kiln strikingFlame strike or kiln strike in an oxidizing atmosphere at slightly lower temperature than most rubies. Kiln strike yields the cleanest results.
-
brownish 'livered' discolorationReduction or flame striking too hot for too long produces undesirable brownish 'livered' results. Avoid reduction and avoid overheating.
Working notes
- Never reduce — reduction causes brownish 'livered' results.
- Flame strike at slightly lower temperature than most rubies.
- Kiln strike yields the cleanest color.
