Northstar Glassworks
Purple Urple
Dark opaque chrome-based purple that works well for blown work and thin stringers; heat slowly to prevent boiling, and keep the flame oxidizing to avoid gray/brown streaks.
Outcomes
-
Deep opaque dark purple, similar in tone to NS-80 HyacinthHeat slowly until the glass glows red before applying full heat. Keep flame oxidizing throughout to maintain clean color. Layer with NS-32 Violet for an even deeper purple effect.
-
Gray and brown streaks on the surfaceIf the flame is not oxidizing enough, gray and brown streaks develop on the surface — an undesirable result the prose flags as a failure mode.
Working notes
Preheat / heat slowly
- Heat slowly — glass will boil if heated too quickly before it glows red.
- Keep flame oxidizing; reduction causes gray and brown surface streaks.
- Does not suffer the cracking problems of similar chrome-based purples, but remains flame and heat sensitive.
