Northstar Glassworks
Oregon Gray
Atmospherically stable opal gray; work slowly in a soft, unfocused flame to avoid surface scarring, then soak in heat more rapidly once smooth.
Outcomes
-
Smooth opal gray surface when worked correctlyWork slowly in a soft, unfocused flame until melted in smooth; once surface is even, heat can be soaked in more rapidly.
-
Scarred or pitted surface from working too quickly or in a sharp flameWorking too fast or in a focused/harsh flame before the glass is smoothed will cause surface scarring that is difficult to recover.
-
Surface scarring — result of insufficient initial slow working in soft flameSurface scarring occurs if heat is applied too rapidly before the glass is fully melted in smooth; the prose implies this is difficult or impossible to recover.
Working notes
Preheat / heat slowly
- Work slowly in a soft, unfocused flame initially to prevent surface scarring.
- Do not apply rapid heat until the surface is fully melted in smooth.
