Northstar Glassworks
Egyptian White Sand
Opaque white sand-toned rod; atmosphere-insensitive but must be worked slowly in a soft, unfocused flame to avoid surface scarring and boiling.
Outcomes
-
Smooth opaque white/sand surface when worked carefully in a soft, unfocused flameWork slowly in a soft, unfocused flame to prevent scarring and boiling. Once fully melted smooth, heat can be introduced more rapidly.
-
Scarred or boiled surface from overheating too quicklyApplying heat too rapidly or with a focused flame before the glass is melted smooth causes surface scarring and boiling — work slowly at first to avoid this.
-
Smooth surface after recoveryOnce the glass is melted in smooth, heat can be soaked in more rapidly without risk of scarring.
Working notes
Preheat / heat slowly
- Work slowly in a soft, unfocused flame at first — rapid heating causes surface scarring and boiling.
- Do not use a focused flame until the glass is fully melted smooth.
