Northstar Glassworks
Blue Exotic
High-intensity saturated striking rod that yields a brilliant metallic blue mirror sheen; brief reduction at the end of an oxidizing work session produces bright blue metallics, while prolonged reduction shifts to earth tones.
Outcomes
-
Brilliant mirror-like metallic blue sheenWork in a super-oxidizing flame throughout, then bathe the finished piece in a strongly reducing flame for only a few seconds to develop the mirror-like blue metallic sheen.
-
Bright blue metallic with slight reductionSlight/brief reduction produces bright blue metallic hues without full mirror development.
-
Earth tones from prolonged reductionProlonged exposure to a reducing flame shifts the color away from blue into earthy brown/tan tones.
-
Interesting patterned surface effects when reduced then encased in clearReduce the color, then encase in clear or drag clear over the surface to produce interesting patterns and varied surface effects.
Working notes
Preheat / heat slowly
- Must be worked in a super-oxidizing flame to prevent unintended reduction.
- Work slowly and gently — this rod is sensitive to heat.
- Does not strike or change in the kiln; color is controlled solely by flame chemistry.
- Anneal with care — evenly saturated metal oxides make this prone to cracking.
- Heavy encasement is not recommended.
