Amber Purple
A striking amber-purple rod that yields deep purples in an oxidizing flame or opaque milky amber under reduction; flame- or kiln-strikeble.
Outcomes
-
Deep purple strikeWork in a sharp oxidizing flame. Flame-strike or kiln-strike at 1125–1150°F for ~60 min for uniform purple color. Burn off any silver haze at high heat before striking.
-
Opaque milky amber when reducedA reducing flame prevents the purple strike and locks the glass as an opaque milky amber — an alternative look rather than a failure.
Working notes
- Never work in a reducing flame if purple is the desired outcome — reduction will yield opaque milky amber instead.
- Set a sharp oxidizing flame; insufficient oxidization causes the color to stay milky rather than striking to purple.
