Greasy Glass
Icy White Satin
A semi-translucent white satin rod with dispersed light-scattering effect; work cold in an oxidizing flame and encase in clear to maximize the satin and prevent surface boiling.
Outcomes
-
semi-translucent white with dispersed satin sheen, light passing through to illuminate the effectWork cold and in a more oxidizing flame. A layer of clear encasement — thin or thick — maximizes and enhances the satin effect and helps prevent surface boiling or scuzzing.
-
surface boiling or scuzzing if overworked or unencasedOver-heating or skipping encasement can cause surface boiling or scuzzing; encasement helps prevent this but is not strictly necessary.
Working notes
Preheat / heat slowly
- Work cold — do not overheat
- Use oxidizing flame
- Always preheat tubing in kiln to prevent thermal shock
- Encasement recommended to prevent surface boiling or scuzzing
